So today I wrote an essay. A final essay. A last minute final essay.
But the good news is it was on something I knew a lot about: Sherlock Holmes. That's right. I got to analyze "The Adventure of the Speckled Band."
And it brings me to my point- the earlier ACD canon stories were quite progressive for their time period.
Its been suggested before, but the popularity of the canon really squandered a lot of the original messages, since ACD couldn't reasonably publish more progressive stories as more people read them.
"The Adventure of the Speckled Band" is a pretty revolting story, given what Dr. Roylott represents and what the snake and the room represent, but that makes the ending and the justice that Holmes is able to do for Helen Stoner that much more powerful. Especially going back to the time period.
